On this day, in 1999, the Secret Society of Happy People created the unofficial holiday of “Admit You’re Happy Day”. Although the name has changed officially to "Happiness Happens Day", the premise remains the same.
The idea is that happiness is contagious, so by sharing in it (be it through a random act of kindness, noting someone else’s act of kindness or just by a positive mindset) you will positively impact someone else's day and create a knock-on effect.
So, what makes you happy?
Most of you reading this will be sat at your work desk, happy to have made it to the midweek, which means one thing...the weekend is almost upon us, a joyous occasion indeed! But slow down, stop. Enjoy living in the present. The weekend will come no matter what, so why not make today and the next two count and spread the happiness.
Take a look around and assess your surroundings, you might share a desk with a colleague so why not pave the path of positivity by asking if they would like a coffee, or even purchase a box of biscuits you can offer around the office. It can be something as simple as just taking the time to ask someone who seems unusually quiet today if they are okay.
Research shows that helping others can also be beneficial to our own mental health. It can reduce stress, improve our emotional wellbeing and even benefit our physical health - acts of kindness can be performed all year around. However, we can focus the extra attention this day brings by actively doing something within our own community. Happiness is contagious, so if you’re happy, tell someone! If someone else is happy, listen to them!
Whatever it is you decided to do, from our team to yours, we wish you (get ready for the tongue twister of the year) a Happy Happiness Happens Day! To learn more about Happiness Happens Day, click here.
