Pizza is the world's favorite fast food, eaten everywhere from at home, in restaurant or street corners. We've been eating it for centuries, the first known pizza was created in Naples, Italy in the 1600s. However, since ancient times Greeks and Egyptians have been cooking a pizza like flatbread with olive oil and spices. Italians who had migrated to America brought their recipes with them. However, pizza did not gain popularity until after WW2. Soldiers stationed in Italy developed a liking to it and brought their love for pizza back home with them. Margherita pizza was named in honor to the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. The Margherita pizza is made to represent the national colors of Italy, by being garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and bazil. Today in the US pizza is a $45.1 billion industry! It's not surprising when let alone there are 70,000 pizzerias across the United States. Top pizza chains include Pizza Hut, Domino's, Little Caesars and Papa John's. Pizza is so popular here in America that there is even an international pizza expo in Las Vegas, filled with pizzeria owners, distributors and food brokers.
