History of Violin Day

The modern violin has been around for roughly 500 years. It was said to have been designed in the 1500’s by Andrea Amati, and by the 1660s it was the most popular virtuoso instrument in Europe. Today, the violin not only remains an indispensable feature of western classical music. There are a lot of violinists and fiddle players throughout the world today, so it we can see why Violin Day caught on. In fact, the violin is present in the most prestigious musical groups in the world, including the Venetian Philharmonic Orchestra! Imagine an instrument with such humble beginnings becoming such an important mainstay of modern classical music.

2. The word violin comes from the Medieval Latin word vitula, meaning stringed instrument;
3. The most expensive violin in the world was made by Giuseppe Guarneri in 1741. This extravagant violin was appraised with a value of $18 million.
4. Violin strings were first made of sheep gut (commonly known as catgut), which was stretched, dried, and twisted.
5. Violins are very complex. Over 70 different pieces of wood are put together to form the modern violin.
