Earth Day is observed annually on April 22, over 180 countries around the world use this day to focus on the Earth and what we can do to improve its state. Established in 1970 by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, who wanted to bring light to serious environmental concerns. The first Earth Day celebrations took place in 2000 universities and colleges. Nelson was awarded the presidential Medal of Freedom for his role as the founder. In 1990 a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hates organize another big campaign, making Earth Day go global. Now over 1 billion people around the world participate, making it the largest civic observance.
The theme for Earth Day this year is to protect threatened and endangered species. Earth Day's main goal this year is to build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values. Also, to encourage people to adopt a more plant based diet. Many species endangered are caused directly or indirectly by humans, climate change, destruction of habitat and illegal hunting. One of the most endangered animals is the Amur Leopard, it's estimated that there are fewer than 60 left in the wild.
