You can celebrate this national day by visiting the panda exhibit at your local zoo, making a donation to a panda based charity and spreading awareness on social media.
The giant panda is native to China. Considered a national treasure, but due to habitat loss they're now restricted to the mountain ranges of central China and it's estimated now that only 1,864 remain in the wild. Scientists are hoping by 2025 this will increase to 5,000. Pandas are very sensitive creatures and these disruptions can lead to problems reproducing. The life span of giant pandas in the wild is approximately 20 years, spending around 55% of that finding and eating bamboo.
It's human's fault the panda population has greatly declined and we need to do whatever we can to protect them. Panda's play a crucial role in China's bamboo forests, they spread seeds and help the vegetation grow. Their diet consists 99% of bamboo and will eat 25-30 pounds a day. Pandas may seem very docile but don't be fooled they have one of the highest bite forces of any carnivore. They can easily bite through bamboo stalks, which humans have trouble cutting even with an axe. Unlike other bears, pandas can't hibernate because their bamboo diet will not allow them to build up enough fat reserves. On November 6, 2006 a video went viral on YouTube of a baby panda sneezing. It has been viewed more than 100 million times.
Why do pandas like old movies? Because they're in black and white.
