What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is a holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May every year. On this day we honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Many people observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, participating in parades, or by holding family gatherings.
How did Memorial Day begin?
Memorial Day started being observed after the American Civil War ended in the spring of 1865. The American Civil War claimed more lives than any other conflict within the U.S. history and was the reason for the establishment of the country's first national cemeteries.
Many people chose to host their own tributes to those who had fallen but it wasn't until the 5th of May 1868 that General John A. Logan called for a nationwide day of remembrance on the 30th of May. At first, the day was called Decoration Day, however, in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May creating a three-day weekend for federal employees.
When is Memorial Day this year?
